Grants For Students From Disadvantaged Background

Scholarships from the federal government aim in promoting students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing health as a profession. They provide funds to the eligible health professions and nursing schools that bestow scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds having financial need. These students are already studying in the schools or accept for enrollment as full time students. These scholarships will only meet expenses for tuitions, other educational expenses and living expenses incurred when students are showing their attendance for the whole year.

Secretary is required to allocate at least 16 per cent of the funds to those schools that accept to provide scholarships to nursing students only and preference gave to former recipients of Exceptional Financial Need and Financial Assistance for Disadvantaged Health Profession Student. Schools are required to accept to the point that while providing scholarships under this program, preference gave to students belonging to the disadvantaged background who are finding themselves incapable to bear the costs of attending the school.

Funds would also provide to the students, who have actively participated wholly or partly, by the Health Careers Opportunity Program or by Nursing Workforce Development programs. Only the schools will provide with grants, which are showing success in initiating any program for recruiting or retaining students from the disadvantaged background and have been able to meet the eligibility criteria for demonstrating the same.

All the accredited public or private schools of nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, allied health, allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatric medicine, optometry, chiropractic, or schools providing graduate programs in the fields of public health, mental health, behavioral or physician assistants can produce applications for the funds and their ultimate beneficiaries are students.

Students should show their eligibility as a lawful citizen of the United States or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or the Mariana Islands, the District of Columbia, Guam, the American Samoa or the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Virgin Islands.

Each school should submit an application containing all the information, agreements and assurances, which are necessary to fulfill and oblige under this program. Depending on the availability of the funds, notices would send to the schools, which in turn would select and finally confer award to the students. The approval and the disposable of the funds generally take one or two months time and the time of the scholarship award is one year.
